The story of Graphic Design at Takoradi Technical University reflects the growth of technical education, new academic opportunities and an evolving creative discipline.
1992 — TERTIARY FOUNDATIONS
A New Era for
Polytechnic Education.
In 1992, polytechnic education in Ghana was upgraded to tertiary status. This development supported the introduction of Higher National Diploma programmes in Commercial Arts at Takoradi Polytechnic.
The foundation for tertiary-level Commercial Arts education was in place.

2007 — ACADEMIC AUTONOMY
More Room to Build
New Programmes.
The Polytechnic Act 2007 (Act 745) strengthened the academic autonomy of the Polytechnic and supported the introduction of new programmes and courses.
2008 — THE DEPARTMENT
Graphic Design Became
Its Own Academic Department.
In 2008, the Department of Graphic Design—now the Department of Graphic Design Technology—was created from the former Fine Art Department. It offered Graphic Design courses leading to the HND in Commercial Arts, Graphic Design Option.
A dedicated structure for Graphic Design education had been established.
